Craigavon Nights

It was my great pleasure to welcome Terry when he first arrived in Northern Ireland to take up the post of Director at the old Southern Board.  I was then managing a children's home and living on-site.  Terry was given the other half of my semi-detached as temporary accommodation before Margaret arrived and they were able to buy a house.  Although much more senior than me, I saw Terry as both a friend and mentor.  In return for his immense experience and wisdom, I had the role of helping to assist him in navigating the subtleties and oddities of Northern Ireland in what were still tense times.  With his huge intellect unencumbered by any degree of arrogance and with his supreme diplomatic skills, Terry didn't need too much guidance from me.  Terry was a true role model for me although I never came close to his level of achievement.  As a social worker, a manager and as a man, he always seemed to know what to do.  He will be much missed and respected by those whose paths he crossed.  In our late night sessions with a bottle of wine, he always spoke of affection and pride in his family especially in those early days when he was living away.  My sympathies to Margaret, Andrew and Sarah.
